We're apologists for buying only the clothes and accessories we need, and wearing them for as long as we can. And at first glance, the "try before you buy" system seems solid. Firstly because it's been popularised by the retail giants, and is something consumers have become used to. But when you consider it in the context of an online retailer, the problems start to appear from a sustainability perspective.


Let's say you order 5 different pairs of vegan shoes, shipped from Portugal to Berlin, with the intention of buying only the pair you like best. To send the shoes a distance of 2781 km, that trip would release 2KG of CO2, and since you intend to return 4 of the 5 pairs ordered, the ecological impact of that shipment would be almost 4KG of CO2. And that is if the shoes travel overland. If the shoes are sent by air, the total emissions on their return could be over 23KG of CO2.
